What’s Covered in Texas Vehicle Inspections?
Although maintenance and repairs are important, there's more to Honda service than that. Luckily, regardless of what your Honda vehicle needs, be it a pre-trip check or a full-fledged Texas motor vehicle inspection, Gillman Honda Houston can help.
What is a Vehicle Inspection?
In order to ensure safety for vehicle owners and those with whom they share the road, the Texas Department of Public Safety requires annual inspections, with the type of inspection varying depending on the type and age of the vehicle. As a Honda dealership in Houston, TX, we will limit ourselves to the criteria for passenger vehicles.
What's Being Inspected?
There are 21 different items being inspected, in a very specific order, with the criteria for new Honda vehicles being different, in some cases, than for older models.
- The Financial Responsibility Insurance Certificate (SR-22) liability insurance form issued by your insurance company
- Horn
- Wipers
- Mirror
- Steering
- Seat belts
- Brakes, including the parking brake
- Tires
- Wheel assembly
- Exhaust system
- Exhaust emission system, 1968 models and later
- Beam indicator, 1948 models and later
- Tail lights and stop lights
- License plate lamp
- Rear reflectors
- Turn signal lamps, 1960 models and later
- Headlights
- Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or motor/serial number
- Gas caps on models two to 24 years old

Why Do Vehicles Fail Inspection?
Vehicles can fail inspection for any number of reasons. One thing we suggest checking even before visiting a Honda service center for inspection is your vehicle fault lights. If any of them - check engine, engine temperature, or transmission, for instance - are lit, your vehicle automatically fails inspection.
We also suggest a visual check of items like headlights, indicator lights, turn signals, and other visual components; these are quick and easy fixes, and can be cleared up beforehand.
If you own an older vehicle of any make or model, emissions cause many failures. To prevent this, we suggest being diligent about maintenance. The good news is that regardless of the reason you fail, you have fifteen days in which to address the issue an get a follow up inspection without having to pay again.
