At Gillman Honda Houston, we know you've seen the television ads touting the safety ratings of vehicles, but chances are you don't understand the difference between the two major rating agencies. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)are the two major organizations that perform safety tests. Here is what they mean.
The NHTSA uses a star rating system to evaluate overall safety and in three specific areas. There are frontal impact, side impact and rollover safety. The IIHS rates vehicles as poor, marginal acceptable and good in five separate areas. Vehicles that do well win a Top Safety Pick designation, while those found to be outstanding early a Top Safety Pick Plus rating.
Of course, there's more to these ratings. Stop by our facilities in Houston where our friendly staff will be happy to fully explain these safety ratings.
