Did you see the 2002 movie, Drumline? It followed the life of Devon Miles, (Nick Cannon) a young drummer from Harlem. He enrolls in a Southern university with big dreams to lead its marching band’s drumline. This is a coveted spot and needless to say the fly-off-the-handle Devon has a lot to learn.
Honda Battle of the Bands (HBOB) is a real competition and it’s extremely competitive. Eight of the country’s best university and college marching bands compete annually. Only one though, can be awarded the victor.
This year marked the 14th annual HBOB Invitational Showcase, held in the Georgia Dome. Honda awarded more than $200,000 in institutional grants to the universities represented at this year’s event.
Who was the big winner? The top award went to the Lincoln University Orange Crush Roaring Lions, who wowed the crowd of over 63,000. It was the first time that this band had participated in HBOB. It was also one of the smallest bands that performed.
