The Honda FCX Clarity was the first model to bear the Clarity name. It was a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle -- one of the first in production in the modern era. Later this year, the new Honda Clarity Fuel Cell will replace it -- bearing a slightly more to-the-point name.
Honda just made an announcement that explains the Clarity Fuel Cell's Captain-Obvious nomenclature.
It is not the only Clarity.
By the end of 2017, there will be three Honda Clarity models sharing the same platform, but offering entirely different powertrains. The first to arrive on the scene in 2017 will be the Clarity Electric -- just as it sounds, an electric vehicle.
Later that year will come the real volume-seller: the Clarity Plug-in Hybrid.
Honda CEO Takahiro Hachigo has long asserted that the plug-in hybrid would be the core of Honda's electrification efforts, largely because it provides the environmental benefits of an electric car, without the drawbacks of limited range, or need for charging stations.
The Clarity Plug-in Hybrid will have an electric range of approximately 40 miles. For longer road trips, it has a gasoline engine which engages to drive in an efficient hybrid mode.
