Given the recent flooding that we've seen in our area lately, we here at Gillman Honda of Houston feel that it's important that you understand what to do if your vehicle has been damaged. The first thing that we must stress is that if your car has been submersed in water more than halfway up the wheels, do not attempt to start it. We understand that your first thought after a flood is that you want to make sure your car is operational, but unfortunately, turning the key in the ignition will more than likely cause more damage, some of which may not be repairable.
Instead, try to gauge how far up the flood water traveled. This can be determined by looking at the line of mud and debris that flood water typically leaves behind. This line indicates how far your car was submerged, which is useful information for our service team to have when estimating what work needs to be done in order to repair your car.
Next, give your insurance company a call. Let them know what happened and ask to review your policy. Comprehensive coverage can typically be used to pay for your repairs, but you want to be sure exactly what your coverage looks like.
Finally, dry out the interior of your car. Upholstery retains moisture which means that your car could become moldy very quickly. Open the doors, grab some towels, and soak up as much water as you can.
Once you've done those three things, contact our service center to arrange an appointment for your car to be inspected. Our team can determine which repairs need to be performed and provide you with an estimate for the total cost. And remember, do not try to start your car. Instead, have it towed. Below is a list of repairs that may be needed in order to fix all flood damage. Not all repairs may be necessary, but it's important for you to understand what work may be in store for your car in the near future.
