Auto-Dimming Rearview Mirrors and How They Really Work

At Gillman Honda Houston, we feel it is important that our customers are as well informed as possible about our vehicles. We are excited to break down the process through which auto-dimming rearview mirrors accomplish their task.

Auto-dimming mirrors are usually built with two sensors inside that detect the light shining into the mirror. These sensors communicate with a microprocessor that is used to send a charge to a transparent gel that is located between the two pieces of glass that make up the mirror. This gel is known as electrochromic gel and when a charge is applied to it, the gel begins to gradually darken. As this gel darkens, it in turn darkens the mirror itself and reduces the glare that the driver can see reflected back at them.

If you live in the Houston area, come on down to Gillman Honda Houston so that our staff can give you a hands-on demonstration of how these auto-dimming mirrors work. Stop on by at anytime and get your test drive set up to experience it for yourself.
