How to Read Motor Oil Viscosity Ratings

You may have heard of motor oil viscosity ratings, but why are they important to understand? At Gillman Honda Houston, we can help you understand what motor oil viscosity ratings are with our content below.

Viscosity is how resistant the motor oil is to flow. Have you seen the numbers and letters that are on bottles of motor oil? These explain its viscosity. The number that is in front of the letter is its viscosity in cold weather, and the number behind the letter is its viscosity during hot temperatures. For instance, if a motor oil is 10W-30, its viscosity is 10 in cold temperatures and 30 in hot temperatures.
